Solid Propulsion

Simulations and Engine Testing Subteam

What We Do:

Solid Propulsion starts with the Simulations and Engine Testing Subteam, which uses a simulation software called openMotor and calculations to perfect our rocket propellant formula. We determine the precise characteristics of the propellant, which consists of Aluminum Powder, Ammonium Perchlorate (APCP) and a binding agent, so that it can be manufactured into rocket motors. This precise formulation has been given a name: “Illini Orange”.

Additionally, our subteam works with our testing hardware, called the Solid Engine Test Stand (or SETS for short). So far, we have created two iterations of the test stand (named SETS_1 and SETS_2), and are working on SETS_3. Our test stands are critical for data acquisition and processing from our hot-fire tests, so we can analyze performance and further refine our rocket motors and structures.
