Fabrication
The fabrication team is responsible for the research, manufacturing, and integration of structural components of the rocket. The team has started to move from commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) rocket parts to student-researched-and-developed (SRAD) and has been testing new methodologies and making progress with various composite manufacturing processes. Recently, this has been done with fin construction, fin retention, and nose cone molds and development. The team plans to innovate further with devices like an X-Winder to advance towards an SRAD body tube. The decision to go SRAD is done not only because of the aim towards space, but to further immerse our members into the materials and design process that goes into a project as complex as this. Being on the team and creating SRAD parts allow members to gain experience in the following skills:
Analyzing material properties and design
Computer Aided Design (Siemens NX)
Additive Manufacturing
Composite manufacturing and layup process
Hands-on builds and structural integrations
